VIS Workshops
The staff of Vancouver Information Services has designed a series of workshops for the Fall 1998 semester. All workshops will be held in the Computer/Training Lab in room 224 of the Classroom Building or in Lib 102. Since seating is limited, we ask that you register for each workshop you would like to attend. Register in one of the following ways: drop off the attached registration form at the Circulation Desk in the Library or email "trainer@vancouver.wsu.edu". This schedule is also available on the Campus Web at

Email (Pine)
This workshop is for those who are unfamiliar with using their campus email accounts. This workshop will cover: composing and sending a message, reading and saving messages, using the address book, and creating a signature. Before attending this class, attendees need to have applied for and received their UNIX (e-mail) account. Applications may be picked up in the Computer Lab (room CL218) and returned to the Computer Lab. Accounts can be obtained in the Computer Lab (room CL218). Please make sure to bring your user ID and password to the class. (PC and Macintosh)

FTP & Pine Attachments
For PC users only. In this class you will learn how to transfer files from the internet to your computer and how to transfer files from your workstation to your UNIX (e-mail) account so that you can send files to others via email (as attachments).

Windows 95 Basics*
If you are just learning to use a computer with Windows95 and feel lost, this workshop is for you. Learn the very basics of getting around in a Windows95 environment like: how to find out what programs are on the computer, what is a "window" and how do I open and close it, and other such gems. If you are a new computer user, it is recommended that you take this workshop before taking any other VIS workshops.

File Management for Windows95*
This workshop is for those Windows95 users who need to know how to move files around on their computer, organize all of their files, and find files quickly. This workshop will cover: creating a file structure, moving files from one location to another, searching for specific files and deleting files. (PC Only)

Introduction to Microsoft Word*
This class is for those who have never or only occasionally used Microsoft Word.
It will cover formatting a document and formatting text. Topics include: margins, page orientation, headers/footers, fonts, bold/italics, page numbering, line spacing, copy/paste, spell checker, etc. (PC and Macintosh)

Finding Environmental Information
Learn what resources are available through the WSUV Library, the Environmental Information Center (EIC), and the community which will help you research environmental questions. The Director of the EIC and a librarian will teach this workshop. This workshop will be held in Library 102.

Searching Griffin, the Library's Catalog: the Basics of Searching
Learn how to successfully search for information in Griffin. This workshop will teach you search techniques and the tricks for more easily using the on-line catalog in the Library. This workshop will be held in LB 102.

Creating Web Pages with HTML†
This workshop is designed to take you from an introduction to HTML to some advanced techniques in Home Page design. Topics will include: what is a home page, how to add text and graphics, linking to other sites, design suggestions, how to use an editor and more. (PC and Macintosh)

Introduction to the Internet, World Wide Web and Netscape
This workshop is for those who are unfamiliar with using the Internet and have had little or no experience with Netscape. This workshop will include: an explanation of the Internet and the World Wide Web, the basics of Netscape, how to read an Internet address and using Netscape to access the Internet. Web Page Maintenance:†
This workshop will take you through the process of loading Web Pages onto the campus servers and updating Web Pages which have already been created so that, when you need to update pages you will know how to do this most efficiently. (PC and Macintosh)

Netscape and Advanced Searching Techniques for the Internet
This workshop is for those who have used Netscape and are familiar with the basics of surfing the Net. Topics included in this workshop will be: organizing and transporting your bookmarks, advanced Netscape features, and detailed search techniques using WWW search engines. (PC and Macintosh)

Learn more about what Nursing databases are available in the library and how to search them more effectively. This workshop will include a demonstration of good search techniques. This workshop will be held in LB 102.

This class is for those who have never or only occasionally used Microsoft Excel. Topics include: opening a new worksheet, spreadsheet functions like the automatic calculating of rows and columns of numbers, formatting rows and columns, and page layout. (PC and Mac)

Connecting to Campus
This workshop is designed to help answer your questions about connecting to the Campus Website, accessing the Campus' electronic resources and services and checking your email from off-campus. Please note that this is a question and answer session. We are not able to demonstrate the exact procedure (step-by-step) because each individual's setup is different. However, we can answer many of your questions about what equipment, accounts and passwords are needed and where to get help. This workshop will be held in LB 102.

Introduction to Lexis/Nexis:
Lexis/Nexis is an online, full-text database of information from newspapers, magazines, company annual reports, business magazines, law journals and much more. This workshop will demonstrate the basics needed to successfully search Lexis/Nexis and to download the information found. Available to any WSUV faculty or student working on a class project, paper or presentation. This workshop will be held in LB 102.

Webpages: Tables, Frames and Forms†
This workshop will teach you how to use tables and frames to add creativity and variety to your webpages. It is also designed to teach you how to create an electronic mail form for your webpage. People accessing your webpage can then fill out the form and the data will be sent via electronic mail to your or someone you specify. (PC and Macintosh)

Earn Certificates!!
This fall we will be awarding Certificates of Completion to people who attend series of workshops. We have designed two series, one on General Computer Knowledge and one on Web Pages/HTML. Upon completion of all workshops within a series, workshop attendees will receive a certificate indicating that they have completed the four workshops listed. The certificate program requires you to take all of the workshops in the series. Listed below are the two series offered.
